The concept for Burn The Floor was born from a 50th birthday performance for Sir Elton John in 1997. The idea was to bring competitive ballroom dance, commonly dubbed “dancesport,” to a new artistic level by showcasing it alongside international dances. It first opened in Elton John’s native UK in 1999, and more than a decade later, it has toured 87 cities in 15 countries and sold over two million tickets.

The Burn The Floor website describes its dances as “international style,” which has been gracing competition stages since 1920. The show consists of five standard ballroom and five Latin American dances. The standard dances include the Waltz, the Viennese Waltz, the Foxtrot, the Tango, and Quickstep, and the Latin dances include the Cha-Cha, the Samba, the Paso Doble, the Rumba, and the Jive. Each dancer has had extensive training in competitive dance, and their performances show not just their experience but also their passion for dance as an art form.

The show is directed and choreographed by Jason Gilkison, best known in Australia for his couple dance performances with partner Peta Roby. The two have collectively spent over 30 years in the dance industry. A former World Champion for Latin and Ballroom Dance, Gilkison also worked as guest choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance. For Burn The Floor, Gilkison went for a highly erotic style, garnishing each routine with shakes and shimmies, splits, and leg lifts, among other decidedly sensual moves.

This year, Burn The Floor has so far made the rounds in Australia, Asia, and North America, with stops in Melbourne, Osaka, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Seoul, Vancouver, Toronto, and West Palm Beach. A special run featuring guest dancers Brian Fortuna and Ali Bastian from Strictly Come Dancing is currently showing at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, expected to finish on September 4th.

The 2010 Broadway cast includes Henry Bayalikov from the Superstars of Dance, Sarah Hives, Trent Widdon, and Peta Murgatroyd from Dancing With the Stars, Sharna Burgess and Anya Garnis from So You Think You Can Dance, U.S. champion Giselle Peacock, Junior & Youth Latin Australian champion Sasha Farber, Australian Professional Latin champion Melanie Hooper, Italian Open champion Gordana Grandosek, Welsh Open champion Patrick Helm, IDSF Open Champion Kevin Clifton, and Asian Pacific Ballroom champions Rebecca and Damon Sugden.

A U.S. tour is set to launch in the fall, opening at the Keller Auditorium in Portland, Oregon on September 7. Stops include Portland, Seattle, San Jose, Sacramento, San Diego, College Station (TX), Orange (TX), Houston, Lousiville, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Cincinnati, Chicago, Fort Myers, Tucson, Los Angeles, Modesto, and Riverside.
